The Benefits of Self-Mailers
Self-mailers are a single sheet of paper folded in half or in thirds. You put your ad copy on one side and the customer's address on the other side.
Self-mailers have often received a bad reputation from writers, ad agencies, and marketing consultants. The usual response from these professionals is that "self-mailers generate low response", "people don't read them," or "they are thrown away." Many clients, however, feel differently.
Self-mailers are much cheaper to produce and mail than standard direct mail packages. With self-mailers you only need to print one page. With standard packages, however, there are usually at least 5 pages that must be coordinated, folded, and computer personalized--all costing you money. Although the direct mail package might give you more total sales, the self-mailer will give you a lower cost per sale.
Self-mailers are very productive when sent to people who already know you, because they are often more likely to read whatever you send them. Even though a self-mailer will obviously look like promotional material, your customers will probably read it.
If you have an extremely large mailing list, self-mailers could be the way to go. You may not be able to afford to send a full direct mail package to everyone on your list. A self-mailer might be the only economical way of reaching everyone.
