How to Choose an Ezine Management Service

Back in the dark ages of the Internet when I was starting my newsletter, you had to do everything yourself. When an issue went out and 50 bad addresses bounced back, it took hours of find-and-delete to fix the list. Each new subscription and remove had to be done manually as well.

Now there are many ezine list management services that will do all the work for you, automatically. Topica and eGroups are two of the best known free services. Top paid services are SparkList and Dundee.net.

The service you chose shouldn't put a tight lid on the number of mailings you can send. Once a week is fine, but there may be situations where you need to send more often.

Plan to have between 5,000 and 10,000 subscribers. Many newsletters quickly grow to this level.

Make sure the list service subscribes and unsubscribes people without involving you. It is also very handy if they provide you with a sign-up form you can put on your web pages. And you will want them to automatically delete duplicate addresses.

While most all list services let you easily download your address list, make sure you take advantage of this feature often. Even the best list services sometimes go down and lose part or all of a list that took years to build.
