What It Takes To Get Your Site On Search Engines
What does it take to get your site listed on major search engines? More than anything else these days, it takes patience. Alta Vista can have your site listed anywhere from within a few days to several weeks. Others, like Excite and Web Crawler, update their database only now and again. There is no telling when they will get your link up, if they ever do.
Your best bet is to register your site, then try to foget about it. Come back several months later and you will suddenly find your listing all over the place.
In spite of all the good advice to go to each major search engine and register your site by hand, I've had just as much luck using the handy one-click registration at http://all4one.com Put in your url, click, watch as they instantly register your site with all the major search enignes, then try to forget about it.
You'll do better if the keyword you want peope to find you with is also the first word in the title of your opening page. Recently I searched for "press release" and practically every site that came up on every search engine had a title that began with the words "press release."
You'll also have more success if there aren't a ton of sites like yours. If there are, you may be better off getting pay-per-click listings at GoTo.com and NetFlip.com.
